Fox-Nahem finesse

Joe Nahem of NY based Fox-Nahem is one of my favorite interior designers. He has a knack for putting together glamorous apartments full of great art and furnishings. This particular apartment was featured in Interior Design magazine (Feb 08) so I decided to share it with you because its not a magazine that you would normally find great residential features. What was an off the shelf design bought from a developer, Nahem saved from cookie-cutter style blandness.

In the master bedroom a Serge Mouille sconce and vintage parchment covered side tables sit perfectly with a custom upholstered wall and headboard.

Dark silk covered walls in the vestibule make for a very dramatic entrance. The circa 70’s stools are by François Monnet, the painting is by Dirk Skreber.

The entrance hall has a custom silk carpet runner. I love the colour of these walls – the magazine mentions that they are covered in a vinyl wallcovering….I’ve never seen vinyl look this glamorous before!

In the main living area a 50’s Edward Wormley sofa covered in an unexpected damask design face a pair of Paul Tuttle armchairs. I adore how Nahem has injected a sense of history into this new apartment. The walnut fluted architraves (not seen in this pic) and built-in cabinetry are a stroke of genius.

Another view of the living room sees an Adnet lamp with a Vladimir Kagan sofa and Nakashima coffee table.

The TV room, which is a little too shagadelic for my taste, has a painting by Richard Prince and pieces by Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kastholm.

The master bathroom is just stunning. I love the combination of tiles and stone, timber and metal. Quite masculine looking – but I’d be more than happy to stand in front of that vanity every morning!

Fox-Nahem Design

I wanted to share some images from an old edition of Elle Decor USA (May 2001) – I’ve been carrying this magazine around with me since I bought it, and has moved from Japan to Australia to Hong Kong with me. This apartment is still one of my favorites to this day. When I first saw the living room it took my breath away. I don’t quite know what it is that I love so much about it, perhaps its the lightness in the room, the beautiful architectural detailing, and the exquisite selection of colours and furniture arrangement. This apartment is in an old Stanford White building in New York, and was designed by the firm Fox-Nahem.

I just adore this living room. The sofa was custom-made, the side chairs are Jean-Michel Frank replica’s and the slipper chairs are Billy Haines.

A Francis Elksins side chair in the living room.

Andre Arbus cabinet in the living room.

Vintage Italian 1950’s wing-back dining chairs in the oak-panelled dining room.

Custom leather sofa and shelving by Fox-Nahem in the library.

Stunningly beautiful kitchen.

Super sexy master bedroom.
